Davis and Sher lead XC in Louisville

LOUISVILLE, Ky. – On a day with weather conditions perfect for running, the men’s and women’s (split squad) cross country teams participated in the Greater Louisville Classic held in Louisville, Ky. The men’s team finished 22nd, while the women’s squad finished 26th.

Absent Austin Williamson, Thomas Davis led the way for the Commodore men, finishing the 8k race in a time of 25:28.99. Chris Noel and Rick Semones were second and third, respectively, for the Commodores. Noel ran the meet with a time of 26:08.23, and Semones ran the event in 26:13.58.

“Chris and Rick were patient in the beginning of the race,” said assistant cross country coach Rhonda Riley. “It was a fast course today, and they worked through the field to have a strong race.”

On the women’s side, Diana Sher earned her first varsity letter at Vanderbilt, running the women’s 5k race in 19:56.75. Mel Eshelman was next in line for the Commodores, finishing the event in 20:05.88. Sarah Scott was the third runner on the day for the women’s team and completed the course in a time of 20:15.81.

“Mel and Sarah had very strong performances today,” remarked Riley.

Louisville, with 58 points, won their home meet in the men’s race. Kentucky took the team title in the women’s race with a grand total of 55 points.

The men’s and women’s cross country teams will race again on October 13. The men will be in Fayetteville, Ark., for the Arkansas-Chile Pepper. The women’s team will split squads. One squad will run in Fayetteville, Ark., at the Arkansas-Chile Pepper, while another squad will travel to Chattanooga, Tenn., to participate in a race hosted by UT-Chattanooga.
