The Cross Country teams will be on the road this weekend competing in their first large-scale meets of the season.

The mens’ team, along with half of the women’s team, will head to Memphis for the Rhodes invitational on October 1.

The 5k and 8k event has participants from 18 schools around the south, including UT Martin, Union, University of the South, Birmingham southern, and others.

“If we execute like we are capable of, a Top 3 finish is within reach,” VU Men’s Cross Country coach Don Bailey said.

Since the Commodore Classic on September 17, the men’s team has been focusing on closing the gaps in the first five positions.

“We’ve had a couple of very solid weeks of workouts since our last competition, and several athletes look to be heading toward big performances,” Bailey said.

Women’s team members Joanna Serago, Caitlin Shannon, Lauren Pence, Ella Wilhoit, Sarah Feagles, Amanda Grosse, Mindy Skelton, Christine Brown, and Sarah Scott will also be joining the men at the Invitational in Memphis this weekend.

Other women’s team members are headed north to South Bend, Indiana for the 50th running of the Notre Dame Invitational.

The meet is the Commodore’s largest event of the season, with 58 total participating teams from around the country.

The event features seven schools in the national top 30, including third ranked Notre Dame and fifth ranked Michigan.

The Rhodes Invitational 5k for women is set for 10:30 a.m. followed by the men’s 8k race at 11 a.m. In Indiana, race time is scheduled 2 p.m.
