KNOXVILLE Tenn., – Vanderbilt’s cross country teams finished the 2006 season Saturday at the NCAA Regionals in Knoxville.

The women finished 10th of the 23 participating teams. The squad was led by senior Erika Schneble, who finished 34th in the 6k run.

“This was a great finish for Erika considering she had to sit out the last few races because of her foot,” Vanderbilt Head Coach Steven Keith said.

Sophomore Carmen Mims, who sat out the first races of the season, earned her highest team finish at the regional event. Mims finished second for the Commodores, posting a time of 22:56.

“Carmen, Julie [Eckerly], Amanda [Scott], and Val [Kazmer] all had great finishes,” Keith said. “They’ll be the core of our team next year so this is very promising.”

The Vanderbilt men finished 13th out of 23 teams, a tremendous improvement over last season’s 20th place finish.

Senior Austin Weaver finished first for the Commodores with a mark of 33:19, followed immediately by Austin Williamson who finished at 33:20.

“The two Austins really worked together for this race,” Keith said. “They both gave a great effort.”
