9/1/2006 Men take 2nd, Women take 5th NASHVILLE, Tenn. — The Commodores opened the cross country season Friday night at the Belmont Invitational (5k/4k), where the men took second overall and the women placed fifth. Vanderbilt Women: Seniors Erika Schneble (14:20) and Brittany Sizer (14:31) led the Commodores to a fifth place finish at the Belmont Invite, finishing 7th and 11th individually. Despite the four Commodore finishes in the top 30, the team was unable to break the top three at the event. 2005 regional leaders UAB took the title Friday night, followed by SEC rival Tennessee and Georgia Tech. “We had a few minor issues that didn’t allow us to perform at our best, but these will be fixed quickly,” VU Head Coach Steve Keith said. “We had a couple of good performances, and hopefully we’ll become more consistent in the weeks to come.” Sophomore Amanda Scott (15:07), senior Ashleigh Wetzel (15:08) and junior Julie Eckerly completed the top 5 for the Commodores. Vanderbilt Men: The Commodore men finished second overall at the Belmont Invitational, falling just behind the Belmont Bruins. Austin Williamson, Thomas Davis, and Austin Weaver stayed together through much of the race, leading the Commodores at the top three slots. Williamson and freshman Davis, who set a new personal best at the contest, finished fifth and sixth overall (15:10.48, 15:10.73), with Weaver taking 14th (15:28.98). “It was great having the top three guys finish so close together,” Keith said. “It’s a great start and I think it shows that we have a promising season ahead.” Junior Chris Noel (15:57) and sophomores Mike Nordlund (15:59) and Rob Whiting (16:23) rounded out the top 6 for the ‘Dores.
