Creighton Defeats Vanderbilt 2-1 in Double Overtime
Nashville, Tenn. — Brian Biggerstaff scored his first career goal with just over three minutes remaining to lead Creighton to a 2-1 double overtime win over Vanderbilt Friday night in the Vanderbilt Soccer Complex. Vanderbilt is now 3-6-4, 0-3-1 in Missouri Valley Conference play, while Creighton improves to 6-3-3, 3-0-1 in league action. Vanderbilt took an early lead when freshman Jamie Gilbert scored his first collegiate goal at the 12:10 mark. He punched in a rebound off Creighton goalkeeper Guido Leon who had deflected a shot from VU’s Ryan Paugh. The goal snapped Creighton’s shutout streak at 374 minutes and 20 seconds. The Commodores took a 1-0 lead into halftime. Creighton was aggressive offensively to begin the second half, but the Commodore defense, anchored by junior goalkeeper Jamie Burns, held off the Blue Jays for the opening 20 minutes. At the 86:21 mark, Creighton’s Brett Rodriguez hit an 18-yard shot up the middle that hit a spot in front of the goal that skidded by Burns to tie the game at one. Creighton attempted three more shots in the final 1:37 that were all saved by Burns. “Jamie (Burns) had an incredible game – it’s unfortunate that the ball took a bad bounce when it did – if not, we’d have a victory,” Vanderbilt Head Coach Tim McClements said. Neither team had a shot on goal in the first overtime period. VU’s Brent Richard had a shot blocked by a Creighton defender at the 101:36 mark, followed by a Casey Steen shot at the 101:42 mark which was also blocked by the Blue Jays. Biggerstaff then collected the game winner on a sharp-angled shot from 10-yards out that hit the right side of the net at the 106:37 mark to give the Blue Jays their first overtime win of the season. “I’m happy with the way our players responded in overtime – we played to win,” McClements added. “I told them following the game that I have never been more proud of a Vanderbilt team that I’ve coached and also have never been as disappointed losing a game because we had the opportunity to win it.” Creighton totaled 20 shots in the game, including 10 on goal, while Vanderbilt numbered 12 shots, seven on goal Burns ended the evening with eight saves, while Creighton’s goalkeeper Guido Leon totaled five saves allowing the one goal. It is the fifth double-overtime game for the Commodores this season and the first loss. Vanderbilt is 0-1-4 in double overtime games.
