Consistent 'Dores are third in Texas

Jan. 30, 2015

ARLINGTON, TX—Vanderbilt’s bowlers maintained the momentum they gained a week ago and are in third place after the first day of the Prairie View A&M Invitational. The Commodores had five, 5-game Baker scores above 1,000 including their best total of the year in one match while defeating three foes and losing to two others.

Fairleigh Dickinson and Nebraska top this 12-team field that is stocked with rated programs. Vandy defeated Alabama State, host Prairie View and Maryland-Eastern Shore while losing by a scant 16 pins to Sam Houston State and Arkansas State.

“I thought it was an overall good day for us,” said Coach John Williamson. “Robyn (Renslow) was just fantastic and both Giselle (Poss) and Katie (Stark) had very good, steady days. We had some mental lapses that cost us in those losses to Sam Houston and Arkansas State but it was nice to play a complete game against UMES to end the day.”

The Black and Gold knocked down 1,107 pins against Alabama State, their high-water mark for the season in this format. But the game of the day came last as the `Dores dualed UMES over five games. Renslow recorded 10 huge strikes to close out the third-fourth and fifth games, icing the victory with her lofty performance. Poss had seven strikes in her last eight frames to help stoke the fire.

“It was another day when almost everyone came through at some point,” Williamson said. “Rebeca started a little slow but settled down and bowled well. We had Natalie (Goodman) in the second spot the first three games, then put Amanda (Fry) in for a game and a half and had Nat finish up.”

The rotation was Stark-Goodman/Fry, Reguero, Poss and Renslow. Nicole Mosesso, coming back from being out with back spasms last week, was not 100% and was withheld from action.

The Commodores will run bowling’s gauntlet tomorrow in team play, starting the day at 9:25 CT against Fairleigh Dickinson with Nebraska on deck and Central Missouri in the hole. The action is streamed on Vanderbilt (VU) Bowling’s USTREAM site and bowl.com is also streaming four featured lanes all day.
