The #14-ranked Commodore women’s golf team won their second tournament of the spring on Saturday at the 3M Lady Jaguar Intercollegiate in Augusta, Ga., firing a three-round score of 896 (299-302-295) to win the event by 10 strokes over second-place Mercer University. Freshman Simin Feng led the way for Vanderbilt, finishing in third place with a score of 222 (74-75-73).

Vanderbilt, who led by 10 strokes heading into the final two rounds on Saturday, let their lead slip away in the second round, but rebounded in the third round by carding a team score of 295, the lowest team round of the tournament.

“Today’s round goes to show you that anything can happen in sports when you don’t come ready to play,” said Vanderbilt head coach Greg Allen. “But, the girls hung in there and dug themselves out of the hole and found a way to win.”

The win is the team’s second win in three events this spring, with the Commodores also winning the Central District Invitational in their first tournament of 2014. Vanderbilt finished second last week at the Darius Rucker Intercollegiate, a field that featured 14 of the top 30 teams in the country.

Junior Kendall Martindale carded a final-round 73 and finished the tournament in a tie for fourth with a total of 223 (75-75-73). Sophomore Jennifer Hahn ended the event in a tie for sixth, one stroke back of Martindale with a 224 (75-75-73), while junior Irina Gabasa finished with a total of 228 (77-76-75) and in a tie for 15th. Freshman Antonia Scherer finished in a tie for 27th with a score of 232 (76-79-77).

Lacey Fears of Mercer won medalist honors with a one-over par, 217 (73-70-74), four strokes better than second place Samantha Postillion of Illinois.

The Commodores return to the course April 4-6 at the PING ASU Invitational in Tempe, Ariz.

“We’re looking forward to getting some quality practice in the next few weeks as we head into April and May,” said Allen.
