With hopes of extending their six-game winning streak and heading into the Holidays on a high note, the Vanderbilt women’s basketball team hosts UNC Asheville on Saturday.

The non-conference game, which tips off at 11:30 a.m., is the beginning of a big day for the Vanderbilt basketball program and its fans. The day features a women’s/men’s doubleheader at Memorial Gym, and will also include the popular Teddy Bear Toss promotion.

The Vanderbilt women, who recently completed a two-game road sweep of Hartford and James Madison, will carry a 9-2 record in the contest against UNC Asheville (4-6) of the Big South Conference.

It will be just the second-ever meeting between the Commodores and Bulldogs. Vanderbilt routed UNC Asheville, 107-51, in Nashville during the 2000-01 season.

Brittany Gwyn leads UNC Asheville in scoring, averaging 11 points per game, and Jeannie Buckner is team’s top rebounder at 5.8 per game.

Vanderbilt enters Saturday’s game on an emotional high after beating James Madison, 89-85, in overtime thriller on Wednesday. Christina Foggie poured in 29 points in the intensity-filled contest that was played before an enthusiastic crowd of 2,206 at JMU.

Vanderbilt faced a three-point deficit late in regulation and again in overtime, but both times, a senior stepped up for the Commodores.

Jasmine Lister, who finished with 16 points, nailed a 3-pointer that tied the game in regulation, and Foggie hit a game-tying 3-pointer in overtime that sparked an 11-4 game-ending run by the Commodores.

Heather Bowe added eight points — including the go-ahead basket in OT — and a team-high seven rebounds. Freshman Marqu’es Webb had a breakout game, scoring a season-high 15 points before fouling out. Webb finished 6-of-9 from the floor.

TEDDY BEAR TOSS
In a promotion that allows fans to get in the holiday spirit and benefits local children, the Vanderbilt program is hosting the annual Teddy Bear toss – a popular promotion sponsored this year by Erie Insurance.

It works like this: Fans are encouraged to bring a new teddy bear or stuffed animal to the gym. During halftime, a target will be placed at the center of the gym and fans will attempt to hit the target with the stuffed animals. The fan that makes it in the target (or comes closest) will win a Vanderbilt prize pack. More importantly, all the teddy bears and stuffed animals will be donated to the Monroe Carell Jr.’s Children Hospital.

The teddy bears will be hand delivered by the women’s basketball team to the Vanderbilt Children’s Hospital, along with representatives from this year’s Teddy Bear Toss sponsor, Erie Insurance.

Please note: All bears must be new and still have the tag attached in order to be accepted by the program.

DOUBLE DIPPER
After the women’s game is completed, the Vanderbilt men’s team will take the floor at 3 p.m. to face Georgia Tech. The Commodores have won two straight games, beating Austin Peay and Marshall.
