NASHVILLE (AP) – Julian Terrell scored 16 points and grabbed a career-high 12 rebounds and Corey Smith scored 16 points off the bench as Vanderbilt beat Appalachian State 68-51 on Wednesday night.

The win was Vanderbilt’s 20th straight non-conference home win.

Mario Moore scored 11 points for Vanderbilt, which remained undefeated at home.

Terrell scored all 16 of his points in the second half, including 10 straight during one stretch when Vanderbilt (7-4) extended a 43-35 lead to 53-39 with 5:55 to play. Smith contributed to a strong Vanderbilt rebounding effort with nine as the Commodores outrebounded Appalachian State 55-32 on the night.

Noah Brown led Appalachian State (5-4) with 15 points, while Chris McFarland added 10 and Derek Thomas grabbed 10 rebounds. The Mountaineers shot a season-low 27 percent from the floor.

Vanderbilt had won its previous six home games by an average of 21.2 points this season, but struggled with Appalachian State much of the game.

The first half was a defensive battle as neither team was able to get into a rhythm offensively. Vanderbilt shot just 33 percent in the first half and committed 11 turnovers en route to a 27-18 lead. Appalachian State managed to connect on 26 percent of its field goal attempts in the first half, including 1-for-12 from 3-point range.

Appalachian State led 11-7 after a 9-0 run, handing Vanderbilt its largest deficit in seven home games this season. Vanderbilt responded with an 8-0 run, sparked by back-to-back 3-pointers from Smith. The Commodores did not trail for the final 29 minutes of the game.

Vanderbilt is 51-3 under coach Kevin Stallings in non-conference home games.
