NASHVILLE – Playing in its first game without second-leading scorer, Christina Foggie, Vanderbilt used a solid defensive effort to shut down the Missouri Tigers, 62-46, Thursday night at Memorial Gym.
Vanderbilt (16-8, 6-5) won the first ever meeting between the two women’s basketball programs, while sending Missouri (15-10, 4-7) to its second-straight loss.
Four Commodores recorded double-digit scoring efforts to pick up some of the scoring that was missing from Foggie. Jasmine Lister led Vanderbilt with 18 points on 8-of-13 shooting, while Elan Brown scored 11 of her 13 points in the first half. Brown also pulled down seven rebounds and tied for the team lead with four assists.
Heather Bowe scored all 11 of her points in the second half to help the Commodores pull away late, as Missouri tried to claw back into the game.
Vanderbilt received great play off the bench from freshmen Jasmine Jenkins and Morgan Batey.
Jenkins scored a career-high 10 points, while tying a career-high with six boards. Batey didn’t need to score much to make an impact on the game, as she grabbed a game and career-high 10 rebounds to go along with four assists and three steals.
For the game, the Commodores shot 46.8 percent (22-of-47) from the field and 50 percent (5-of-10) from behind the three-point line. Vanderbilt also outrebounded Missouri, 38-29.
Sydney Crafton led all scorers with 20 points on 9-of-16 shooting, while also recording a team-high seven rebounds for the Tigers. As a team, Missouri shot just 31 percent (18-of-58) from the floor and a miserable 14 percent (4-of-27) from beyond the arc.
Vanderbilt used a 12-0 run late in the first half to create some distance just before halftime. Brown sparked the run with a trio of three-pointers, while the Commodores also received a boost from Batey and Jenkins off the bench.
The Commodores led 29-20 at the half behind 11 first half points from Brown. Lister scored six points and had two assists.
As a team, Vanderbilt shot 42 percent (11-of-26) from the field and 50 percent (3-of-6) from three-point range. The bench was able to provide some energy throughout the first half, as Vanderbilt outscored Missouri 10-3 in that category.
Crafton led the Tigers with 11 points off 5-of-9 shooting, while also pulling down four rebounds. Missouri shot just 29 percent (8-of-27) from the field and only 15 percent (2-of-13) from behind the three-point line.
