Commodores start third at Kutztown

READING, PA—Vanderbilt went 5-1 on the first day of the Kutztown Invitational including wins over two rated opponents and sits in third place in the 22 team field.

The Commodores downed Maryland-Eastern Shore (976-878) in the second game of the day and finished off Fairleigh Dickinson (1,033-971) in the finale. In between they topped Long Island (1,095-992), St. Francis, Pa (965-940), Medaille (991-769) and was upset by Delaware State (995-973).

“I thought our bowling overall was pretty marginal,” said Coach John Williamson. “In every set we had at least one game of 240 or better and yet we only cracked 1,000 twice. We had 23 missed makeable spares, about half were single pins, and we were never able to get momentum.”

Vandy’s lineup began the day as Nicole Powell, Tori Ferris, Kris Quah, Giselle Poss and Robyn Renslow. Two and a half games in Katie Stark was inserted for Powell and Williamson thought the Florida sophomore “bowled pretty good” the rest of the day.

McKendree leads the tournament with 6,080 pins with FDU next at 6,043 and VU third at 6,033. North Carolina A&T and Wisconsin-Whitewater are next in the closely bunched field.

The threat of snow saw a number of teams withdraw from the original field and tournament officials were reassessing Saturday’s schedule as this was written. The starting time for play has already been pushed back at least to 10:30 Central and that will be reviewed later.
