Commodores start fifth at Kutztown

Jan. 23, 2015

READING, PA.–Vanderbilt won four games while dropping a pair in the opening round of play at the Kutztown Invitational Friday. The standings for the 28 team field are based on pin fall and the Commodores are in fifth place with 6,038 (201.3 Baker average), trailing Central Missouri’s pace setting 6,439 (214), Fairleigh Dickinson, Wisconsin-Whitewater and Stephen F. Austin.

Vandy’s day got off to a good start, knocking over 1,085 pins in beating St. Francis (Pa) by over 100 pins. True to the `Dores script this season, that was followed by losing a tight match to Adelphi. Game 3 was a low scoring affair in topping Mount Aloysius, 896-655, before rebounding strong to defeat Cheyney State, 1,122-970, in a match shown on bowl.com.

The afternoon closed with a win over Pitt-Bradford and a narrow loss to FDU. The Commodores used a Baker rotation of Katie Stark, Amanda Fry, Rebeca Reguero, Giselle Poss and Robyn Renslow against FDU and led in the 5-game set by one pin after four games.

The deciding game was a ragged one with both teams struggling with splits and open frames. Back-to-back opens with makeable spares in the last half of the match left Renslow’s double in the tenth too little, too late.

Saturday’s action starts at 9:25 (EST) with the Commodores opening against Monmouth. Six team games will be bowled; Vanderbilt’s games will be streamed on the Vanderbilt bowling USTREAM channel and bowl.com will feature four games on the house cameras all day.

The tournament concludes Sunday.
