Commodores Seeded Fourth at the Storm Flyer Classic

No. 2 Vanderbilt won four, dropped one match on Friday

LOCKPORT, Ill. — The Vanderbilt bowling team, ranked second in the NTCA Coaches Poll, made a steady climb up the leaderboard to end Friday’s action at the Storm Flyer Classic seeded fourth.

“Today started out with some good wins, but the shot making was lacking,” head coach John Williamson said. “I thought we played pretty well against Jacksonville State for the first three games, and then we let it get away from us. I liked the last two rounds. I felt like we played pretty well and ended up respectable in the standings. Tomorrow, we’ll have a better approach to start, and we’ll be in a much better place tomorrow night.”

The Commodores got off to a slow start but steadily improved their pin counts as the day progressed. In rounds 1 and 2, Vandy defeated 10th-ranked Maryville and No. 17 Tulane by respective scores of 951-938 and 951-941.

Vandy’s sole loss of the day was to top-seeded Jacksonville State. The Dores led the Gamecocks through three games, but suffered a loss in game four, which gave Jax State a lead it would not relinquish.

Round 4 yielded the Dores’ highest-scoring match of the day, a 1,065-872 victory over No. 13 North Carolina A&T.

Vandy defeated Indianapolis, 1,020-891, to end the first day of competition.

Day 2 of the Storm Flyer Classic gets underway at 9:25 a.m. when the Dores face Marian in the first of five traditional games.

The Dores’ matches will be streamed live on YouTube and Facebook with Emil Williams on the call. Fans can follow Vanderbilt bowling on X and Instagram at @VandyBowling for updates.
