Commodores Overcome TAMU-CC 11/19/2005
CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas — The No. 17/20 Vanderbilt women’s basketball team used a second-half surge to sink the Texas A&M-Corpus Christi Islanders, 65-51, Saturday at the American Bank Center. Junior Caroline Williams led the Commodores with 13 points. Junior Carla Thomas scored five of her 11 points during a 14-point VU run that sealed the game. Corpus Christi took its first lead of the game at the 12:01 mark of the second half. Following a VU timeout, a Thomas jumper gave VU back the advantage, 36-35. The Dores held the Islanders scoreless for four and a half minutes during a 14-0 run which broke the game open and gave Vanderbilt a 48-35 lead with under eight minutes to play. The Commodores fought through early foul trouble to take a 25-20 lead into the break. Sherwood was whistled for three fouls, while Davis, Stringfield, Thomas and Williams had two. With the score tied at 12 at the 11-minute mark, Vanderbilt broke off on a 10-0 run capped by a Williams’ jumper. But Vanderbilt was held scoreless through the final 5:39 on the half and the Islanders crawled back to within five points on a layup by Jenesis Shaw with 3:52 on the clock. That proved to be the final score of the first 20 minutes. Vanderbilt returns to action on Tuesday, Nov. 22, to take on Alabama A&M in the first game of a women/men doubleheader at Memorial Gymnasium. The women tip-off at 6 p.m. CT, with the men to follow 30 minutes after the completion of the first game. |
