Commodores Open Preseason With 72-42 Win Over Ohio Legends 11-3-04

NASHVILLE, Tenn. — Senior guard Abi Ramsey scored 13 points to lead four Vanderbilt players in double figures as the Commodores won their first exhibition game of the women’s basketball season, 72-42, over the Ohio Legends Tuesday night in Memorial Gymnasium.

Vanderbilt shot 53.7 percent from the field and held the Legends to 22.5 percent from the field.

Sophomores Carla Thomas and Katie Antony each scored 12 points while Ashley Earley added 11 points. The Commodore defense held the Legends to nine total field goals in the game, but the Legends scored 23 of their 42 points from the free-throw line. DeAnna Stevenson led the Legends with 13 points and Amber Sneed added 12 points.

Vanderbilt led 43-16 at halftime. The Commodores shot 60 percent in the first half making good on 18 of their 30 shots. Ramsey scored 12 of her 13 points in the half. Thomas and Antony each added eight points in the half.

Vanderbilt made its first four shots and built a 10-2 lead after a free throw from Earley. Antony scored six of the Commodores first 14 points. A lay-up from Ramsey put Vanderbilt ahead, 18-3, with 13:06 remaining. The Commodores extended their lead to 33-10 after a lay-up from Thomas with 4:35 remaining in the half. Vanderbilt outscored the Legends, 10-6, the remaining four minutes to make for the halftime score.

Vandy’s defense held the Legends scoreless in the first five minutes of the second half as the Commodores built a 53-16 lead after Dee Davis’ free throw. The Legends closed within 57-28 at the 11:18 mark of the second half, but the Commodores used a 6-3 run to kill the Legends’ momentum.

Cherish Stringfield and Nicole Jules each scored six points for the Commodores while Caroline Williams and Davis each chipped in five points. Vandy forced 25 turnovers and recorded 12 steals defensively.

Vanderbilt returns to action Thurs., Nov. 11, when the Commodores host EA Sports at 7 p.m. in the team’s final exhibition game. The Commodores open up the regular season at 7 p.m. on Nov. 19 when they play host to St. Francis (Pa.).
