HOUSTON, TX—Vanderbilt won five of its six games on the first day of its 2016-17 season Friday at Sam Houston’s Track Kat Klash.

The Commodores are in sixth place in a tightly bunched field where just 70 pins separate the second through sixth teams. Nebraska ended its day with a flurry and leads the tournament.

“We substituted liberally,” Coach John Williamson said. “We wanted to get our three freshmen’s feet wet quickly and the schedule for the day was conducive. I thought G (Giselle Poss) and Kris (Quah) had pretty good days and all three newcomers did a good job.”

The freshmen included Adel Wahner, who saw action in the lead-off position of the Baker game format, Emily Rigney who was in the middle of the lineup and Maria Bulanova, the anchor.

Vandy’s pin count took a hit during an 893-856 win over Southern, a five-game stretch that produced 16 Commodore splits. Later in the day, Vanderbilt was back on the same lanes and they played similar to the others and they notched 100 more pins.

Here are VU’s Friday results:
Vanderbilt 988 Jackson State 842
