NEW BRUNSWICK, NJ—Vanderbilt used consistent team scores hovering near 1,000 to jump into third place after two days of the New Jersey Jamboree Saturday.

The finish places the Commodores in Sunday’s championship bracket of Baker play, where they will face sixth-place Maryland-Eastern Shore Sunday at 8:00 a.m. (CST) in what will be a rematch of today’s Vandy victory. The winner of Sunday’s match plays No. 2 Fairleigh Dickinson, which gets a bye in the first round.

Vanderbilt won three of its five Saturday games, topping UMES, Adelphi and St. Francis Brooklyn while losing to McKendree and North Carolina A&T. The `Dores were victims of their own miscues in the two losses — three opens in the 10th in a narrow loss to ninth-ranked McKendree and four missed makeable spares versus A&T.

“This is very early in the season and some of our mistakes are typical,” said Coach John Williamson. “But what I liked was the way we bounced back from disappointment and posted strong scores the next game.”

The Commodores used a rotation of Tori Ferris, Nicole Powell, Giselle Poss, Kristin Quah and Robin Renslow to start the first game and inserted Katie Stark for Powell midway in Game 2. The lineup stayed that way the rest of the day.

“Tori had another good day,” Williamson said, “especially her last four games in which her lowest score was 209. Giselle threw a lot of strikes and gave us a big boost in some game despite some tough bowling luck that prevented her from even stronger scores.”

Poss ended the individual play in seventh place, Vanderbilt’s best finisher, with a 212 average. She was powered by game of 265-248-237; Renslow was 13th with steady scores but lacking the big games to push her higher on the leader board.
