Vanderbilt’s women’s golf team held in there against some windy conditions and came away from the second-round of the NCAA Championships in a tie for fifth with a team total of 591 (297-294) at the Tradition Golf Club in Bryan, Texas. The Commodores tied for the third-best team total of the day on Thursday, posting a six-over par, 294, in their second time around the golf course.
“It was a solid performance today,” said Vanderbilt head coach Greg Allen. “This group is having fun. They’re relaxed and their minds are at ease. “
Vanderbilt got another stellar performance from sophomore Anna Leigh Keith, who eased her way around with another even-par, 72, after posting three birdies, 12 pars, and three bogeys for the second consecutive day. Keith is in a tie for sixth with a 144 total (72-72).
“Eddie (Anna Leigh Keith) hung in there all day and spent most of the day under par,” said Allen. “She had a couple of bogeys down the stretch, but had a huge birdie on 18.”
Freshman Rene Sobolewski also shot an even-par 72 on the day. The freshman from Buffalo, N.Y., is in a tie for 30th overall (77-72=149), and has made tremendous strides since her first tournament of the year and her career, which also took place at The Tradition in September. At that tournament, she finished 92nd out of 93 golfers.
“I’m really excited about Rene, who earned her first postseason star today (awarded to rounds of par or better),” said Allen. “We talked about that earlier today, and she went out and got one.
VU also counted a 74 from sophomore Lauren Stratton, and got a pair of 76’s from Marina Alex and Megan Grehan.
“I thought Grehan hung in there after getting a couple of bogeys early in her round and not having a great day yesterday, and Stratty is hitting the ball well,” said Allen. “We could see something really good out of her over the weekend.”
The Commodores are seven strokes back of first place UCLA, who is at eight-over par, 584 (289-295), three strokes ahead of second-place Purdue. Vanderbilt is in a tie with Virginia and trail fourth-place and host Texas A&M by two strokes.
Individually, Austin Ernst of LSU leads the tournament with a six-under par, 138. She leads Numa Gulyanamitta of Purdue by three strokes heading into the third round.
Vanderbilt will tee off at 12:30 on Friday with the Aggies and Virginia off of the first tee.
