MILLSBORO, DE—It was a bumpy ride for Vanderbilt’s bowling team on the first day of Maryland-Eastern Shore’s annual Hawk Classic. The Commodores won just two of six games but with standings aimed at total pin count, they landed in fourth place heading into Saturday’s team game portion.

Vanderbilt used a variety of lineups trying to find the right mix. It began the day losing to Fairleigh Dickinson’s strong 1,105 game. The `Dores would tally five scores in the mid-900’s, peaking to 1,034 pins in a win over St. Francis (Pa).

FDU (6,110 pins) was the first day leader, ahead of Sam Houston State by about 170 pins. North Carolina A&T was a rather surprising third, winning all six of its games including a clear triumph over Vandy in the third game of the day. The Commodores (5,764) were fourth, 66 pins ahead of host UMES. Both teams struggled to 2-4 won-loss marks on the day.

Play resumes Saturday at 7:25 (EST) with five team games on tap.
