Commodores Host Mississippi State Thursday

1/10/2006

Carla Thomas

The No. 21/23 Vanderbilt women’s basketball team plays hosts to its 2006 Southeastern Conference home opener Thursday when Mississippi State visits Memorial Gymnasium for a 7 p.m. CT tip-off.

Junior Carla Thomas stands only one point away from becoming only the 11th Commodore to reach 1,000 career points as a junior. A concensus preseason All-SEC selection, Thomas has posted a pair of double-doubles since returning from an injury that held her out of a pair of games in December.

The Commodores (11-4, 0-1) will be looking to bounce back from a heartbreaking loss at Arkansas on Sunday. The Lady ‘Backs needed a last-second three-pointer from halfcourt to extend the game into overtime, where there were able to win at the free throw line with only two seconds remaining.

Mississippi State was a 70-59 winner at Ole Miss on Sunday, evening the Bulldogs league record at 1-1.

In the last meeting between the Commodores and Lady Bulldogs, Thomas posted career highs with 33 points and 17 rebounds as Vanderbilt won in double-overtime, 106-98. Former Lady Bulldog Tan White’s 47 points were not enough to overcome the Thomas and the Commodores.
