KENNER, LA—Vanderbilt lost a semi-final game to reigning national champion Sam Houston State and finished third at the All-State Sugar Bowl Invitational Sunday. Sam Houston would go on to defeat Stephen F. Austin in the championship match, 4-3, in best of seven Baker play.

Vanderbilt put away UAB in the championship bracket quarter-final, 4-1, with a rotation of Tori Ferris, Natalie Goodman, Nicole Mosesso, Giselle Poss and Robyn Renslow. The Commodores then jumped to a 2-1 lead on Sam Houston State, racking up six strikes in a row at one point in Game 3. They lost altitude from that point, managing scores of 167-183-176 and losing a one-pin decision in Game 5.

Vandy avenged Saturday’s upset loss to the host Green Wave by winning 4-0 in the consolation game.

“We just didn’t make enough shots when we needed them,” said Coach John Williamson. “We got started ok but then made a few mistakes and it’s hard to beat a team as good as Sam Houston doing that. We’ll get back to work and strive to be more consistent in New Jersey in two weeks.”

The next competition comes Oct. 31 at Fairleigh Dickinson’s Invitational in North Brunswick, N.J.
