The Commodore women’s golf team claimed their first team title of the 2015-16 campaign on Tuesday at the Las Vegas Collegiate Showdown after finishing the tournament with a 33-under par, 831 total (280-275-276), which tied host UNLV for the team championship at the Boulder Creek Golf Club. Senior Jennifer Hahn led all Vanderbilt individuals, finishing in a tie for fifth and ending the event with an 11-under par, 211 (68-69-68).
Vanderbilt closed the tournament on a very high note, shooting a 12-under par, 276, total on Tuesday, with junior Kate Sborov once again carding a career-low round, this time a six-under, 66. The Commodores also counted Hahn’s 68, a 69 from sophomore Alexandra Farnsworth, and a 73 from sophomore Cindy Ha. The 276 tied for the fourth-lowest single-round team score in program history, and the three-round score of 831 demolished the previous program record, which was set at the 2014 NCAA East Regional in Tallahassee, Fla., by nine shots.
Sborov, Farnsworth, and Hahn each made five birdies on the day, with Sborov also throwing in an eagle on the par-five, 502-yard 13th. Altogether, Vanderbilt counted 17 birdies and an eagle on Tuesday, and for the tournament, a whopping 59 birdies and three eagles in the three-day event.
“It was such an exciting day!,” said associate head coach Holly Clark. “The girls all said yesterday when we left the course that they weren’t leaving Vegas without finishing the season on a good note. This morning before the round, I could tell it was going to be a fun day. They were focused and ready. I loved watching them compete, fist pump after great birdies, encourage their teammates, and fight to the very end. I am so proud of Kate…what a day!!!! She was on fire early on in the round and kept giving herself opportunities. It was unreal! Kate has had many personal bests over the last few weeks, but today was special. I am happy for her!”
UNLV surged late to tie Vanderbilt after the Runnin Rebels posted the low round of the tournament with a 272, and the two teams finished three strokes ahead of third-place San Diego State.
Individually, Anna Newell of Tennessee won medalist honors with an 18-under par, 198 (68-65-65) total, which was two shots better than Kassidy Teare of Long Beach State.
“I asked the girls how they felt after the tournament, and they said it’s bittersweet,” said Clark. They are even more motivated to make sure they are prepared for the spring season. I am proud of this team, but even more proud of the young women they are and how they represent Vanderbilt University.”
The tournament was the final fall event for the Commodores. Vanderbilt returns to the course February 7-9 in Orlando, Fla., for the UCF Challenge.
