The Commodore women’s golf team ended their first tournament of the spring season at the UCF Challenge in eighth place after finishing the event with a final team score of 895 (+31, 309-289-297). Sophomore Cindy Ha led Vanderbilt for the week, firing a four-over par, 220 (78-71-71), to finish in a tie for sixth at the Eagle Creek Golf Club.
Senior Jennifer Hahn finished in the top 20 with a score of 223 (76-69-78), which placed her in a tie for 19th individually. Sophomore Alexandra Farnsworth carded a 226 (78-76-72) to finish in a tie for 33rd, freshman Courtney Zeng ended the tournament with a 229 (77-76-76), which tied her for 44th, and junior Kate Sborov finished the week with a 233 (82-73-78), which was good for 65th. Antonia Scherer finished with a 234 (77-78-79, T-66) playing as an individual.
“I thought about 7-8 holes into the round we were going to have a chance and then a nine and several three putts later, well, we finish 8th,” said Vanderbilt head coach Greg Allen. “I’m disappointed, but I’m certainly not discouraged. I like how this team bounced back from the tough first day and I love the positive energy of this team. Our ball striking as a team the last two days was impressive. We need to spend a lot of time on our wedge tee and the putting green these next several weeks and I think we’ll be just fine.”
Houston won the team title with a final score of 885 (295-295-295), one shot better than second-place Tulane. F. Gustafsson Spang of East Carolina won medalist honors with a three-under par, 213 (73-68-72).
Vanderbilt returns to the course March 4-6 at the Darius Rucker Intercollegiate in Hilton Head, S.C.
