How It Happened
First Quarter: Vanderbilt 19, NC State 19
NC State took an 8-4 lead early before a bucket from Kayla Overbeck ended the spurt and gave the Dores some momentum. Out of the media timeout at the 4:58 mark the Wolfpack utilized a 6-0 run to open a 17-9 lead before three unanswered triples from Erin Whalen, Rachel Bell and Cierra Walker tied the game at 17 with less than a minute to go in the quarter as the teams traded late buckets to go into the quarter tied at 19.

Second Quarter: NC State 36, Vanderbilt 32
The Wolfpack scored the first bucket of the quarter to end the stalemate but Rachel Bell used her quick feet to clear some space and drain a shot which tied the game for the third time. In a game full of runs, the Wolfpack used a 7-0 run to regain the lead and pull ahead 28-21 at the 5:25 mark. Each time the Wolfpack made a run the Commodores were able to respond keeping the visitors scoreless for 2:19 prior to the media timeout. One area in which NC State had an early advantage was points off turnovers, scoring 10 of their 36 first half points on Vanderbilt miscues. The Wolfpack pulled ahead six with back-to-back triples but a runner from Whalen cut the lead to four points, 36-32, at the half.

Third Quarter: NC State 50, Vanderbilt 46
Trailing by four, Bell drilled the first bucket of the quarter to cut the lead to just one bucket at 6:34 but the Wolfpack wouldn’t go quietly but the Dores battled and with a bucket on the inside from Overbeck tied the score at 40 at the media timeout. The teams traded buckets down the stretch but it was the Wolfpack who pulled ahead and were up 50-46 heading into the fourth and final quarter.

Fourth Quarter: Vanderbilt 83, NC State 72
The Wolfpack used a 7-2 run to pull ahead 59-51 with 7:11 left in the quarter forcing White to call a timeout to regroup. Out of the timeout Bell drilled a bucket and moved just four points away from 1,000. NC State’s Konig got hot late and with back-to-back triples pushed the visitors lead to double-digits for the first time with 6:03 remaining A jumper from Bell put the Commodores as close as eight points but that was as close as they would get the remainder of the contest.
