Commodores fall short to UC-Riverside 50-47

RIVERSIDE, Calif. (AP) — Kemie Nkele had 17 points and eight rebounds and UC Riverside held No. 16 Vanderbilt scoreless for the final 2:31 to earn a 50-47 upset on Saturday.

Neither team shot well as Riverside (3-4), which was playing its home opener, made 35 percent while Vanderbilt was good on just 33 percent.

Christina Wirth had 17 points and eight rebounds and Chanel Chisholm added 10 points for Vanderbilt (8-2).

The Commodores took their last lead at 47-46 with 2:31 left in the game as Wirth made a basket and a free throw. Nkele scored on a put-back with 48.9 seconds remaining to put the Highlanders up 48-47. Tainoisouti Lott made two free throws to give Riverside a three-point lead.

Vanderbilt’s Jennifer Risper missed a shot at the buzzer that would have sent the game into overtime.
