Saint Louis, Mo.

— Three Vanderbilt men’s soccer players have received honors from the Missouri Valley Conference. Senior Jimmy Stone and freshman Justin Moreland were named to the All-Conference Honorable Mention team, while Moreland and Jamie Gilbert were named to the All-Freshman team.

Stone (5-7, Sr., F, Beaumont, Texas) led the Commodores in shots with 36 and in points with nine (4G, 1A). Stone scored two goals vs. Belmont marking the first time since his freshman season that he totaled two goals in a game. In his freshman season (2000), he numbered two goals against Southwest Missouri State, including the game winner in double overtime and at the end of the season was named to the MVC Newcomer team.

“It was great to see Jimmy finally have a break-out year and to be recognized for his performance,” Vanderbilt Head Coach Tim McClements said. “Jimmy battled back from injury to become our most dangerous offensive player. He was a team captain and was a true leader both on and off the field.”

Moreland (5-10, Fr., D, Broken Arrow, Okla.) and Gilbert (5-10, Fr., MF, Broken Arrow, Okla.) played in every game this season and were the anchors to the Commodore midfield. Moreland totaled seven shots and one assist, while Gilbert scored his only goal of the season vs. Creighton. That goal snapped Creighton’s shutout streak at 374 minutes and 20 seconds. Moreland and Gilbert are not only Vanderbilt teammates, but are also teammates on the Tulsa Nationals Soccer Club.

“Justin and Jamie will be a big part of Vanderbilt soccer’s future success,” McClements said. “Justin was a consistent performer all year. He is a versatile payer who played almost every minute of every game as a freshman. This is a great honor for him as he was truly an impact player for us.”

“Jamie had an outstanding freshman season also. As a freshman he ran our midfield and was the heart and soul of our team. His work ethic is outstanding,” McClements added.

The Commodores finished the season with a 3-10-5 record and played a school-record seven double overtime games with a roster that included 18 newcomers and only two returning starters.
