Commodores Drop Panamericana 82-54 in Exhibition Opener

Six Commodores scored in double figures led by Jason Holwerda’s 12 points as Vanderbilt eased past the University of Panamericana (Mexico) 82-54, Tuesday at Memorial Gymnasium.

Dawid Przybyszewski recorded a double-double with 11 rebounds and 10 points. Mario Moore hit a trio of three-pointers and finished with 11 points. Corey Smith, Alex Gordon and Julian Terrell contributed 10 points each in the win.

The Commodores, who shot 47.1 percent from the field, took advantage of their size scoring 50 of their 82 points in the paint. Vanderbilt also earned 29 points off 20 Panther turnovers.

Panamericana pulled to within a 10-9 margin six minutes into the game before the Commodores surged ahead to stay. A trio of freshmen, Gordon, Foster and DeMarre Carroll helped Vanderbilt ignite a run that grew the Commodores’ lead to 28-11. Gordon contributed a three-pointer and floater in the lane, while Foster added a basket, a blocked shot and two rebounds. Carroll had an assist and basket in the lane during the stretch.

Vanderbilt carried a 47-22 lead into halftime. The Commodores’ advantage never fell below 23 in the second stanza.

Panamericana was led in scoring by Froylan Verdugo’s 20 points. Gerson Hernandez added 14 points as the Panthers only other double-digit scorer. The Panthers did not convert a three-pointer in the game.

The Commodores play their final exhibition contest this Saturday when Alabama-Huntsville comes to Memorial Gymnasium. Game time is set for 5 p.m.
