Two Vanderbilt freshmen scored goals to lead the Commodores to a 2-1 victory over Carson Newman in a scrimmage at Drakes Creek Park in Hendersonville Saturday night.

Joe Germanese (5-10, Fr., F) scored the first goal of the game in the first half for the Commodores before Carson Newman tied the game prior to halftime, 1-1.  Jerry Yirenkyi (5-7, 160, Fr., F) scored the game winner with just under 10 minutes remaining in the game to give Vanderbilt the win.

“It’s nice to see the freshmen make an immediate impact,” VU Head Coach Tim McClements said.  “It was a great effort from top to bottom, but we still have some things to work on.”

The Commodores will continue preseason training before the season opener at Belmont Sept. 1 at 7 pm.  The home opener is Sept. 6 vs. Drury at 3 pm in the Vanderbilt Soccer Stadium.
