Commodores Cruise Past Athletes In Action 90-74 11-17-03 11/17/2003 The Commodore offense was in high gear Monday night as they defeated Athletes In Action 90-74. Four players were in double figures for Vanderbilt and junior Ashley Earley recorded a double-double with 20 points and 11 rebounds. In addition to Earley, the other double-digit scorers were freshman Dee Davis who had 17, and seniors Jenni Benningfield and Hillary Hager who each scored 16. Had this been a regular season game, Earley’s 20 points would have been a new career high. Athletes In Action also had very balanced scoring as they had five players turn in double-digit scoring performances. Mandy Arndtson led AIA with 16. The Vanderbilt offense was clicking early. VU jumped out to a 7-0 lead and quickly made it a 17-2 advantage while connecting on their first six shots. The buckets were a product of a very efficient offense that yielded easy looks at the basket. The ‘Dores outscored AIA 46-26 in the paint. Athletes In Action trailed by as many as 15 in the first half, but cut the VU lead to six after Tracey Guerrette’s three-pointer. The six-point deficit would be as close as AIA would get for the rest of the game. The hot shooting continued for the Commodores as they shot 55.6 percent from the field for the night. Vanderbilt was also effective from long range as they connected on 6-of 12 three-pointers. Davis, from Cincinnati, Ohio, put together another solid game. To go along with her 17 points she also dished six assists while pulling down six rebounds. The Commodores open the regular season on the road this weekend as they travel to Vermont for the Bank North Classic beginning on Friday. |
