Commodores Contend with Aggies

Led by senior duo in double figures

COLLEGE STATION, Texas — Vanderbilt fell to Texas A&M 76-58 on Thursday in Reed Arena.

The Commodores (12-13, 3-8 SEC) were led by the senior duo of Jordyn Cambridge and Briane Alexander in double figures. Cambridge had 13 points, five rebounds, four assists and two steals while Alexander finished with 12 points.

Texas A&M (14-9, 4-7 SEC) scored immediately after tip with only six seconds having ticked off the clock thanks to a fast break layup from Aaliyah Patty. Vanderbilt responded immediately with a jump shot from Cambridge for the game’s first and only tie.

The opening stanza continued on as the Commodores fought back into contention heading into the second period down 18-11.

The visitors continued to battle but fell into a deficit as large as 11 points in the second quarter. Receiving contributions from Alexander, Cambridge, Iyana Moore and De’Mauri Flournoy, the Commodores notched their highest point total (18) of the game.

With halftime on the horizon, Vandy brought the Aggie lead within nine at 38-29.

After the break, Vanderbilt was able to hold Texas A&M to 15 points in the third quarter for its lowest point total in a period on the night.

Vanderbilt’s offensive efforts in the fourth period positioned them at the free throw line where the Commodores capitalized, shooting 90 percent from the charity stripe in this period alone. But another Texas A&M 20-point stanza was just the lift the home team needed to take the contest by 18 points.

The Aggies lived in the paint and garnered 32 points from that area. Texas A&M’s reserves produced 14 points but were outflanked by the Vanderbilt bench by four.

The freshmen duo of Moore and Sacha Washington were both 4 of 4 from the free throw line.

Texas A&M was led by Qadashah Hoppie and Kayla Wells who combined for 38 points.

Vanderbilt will continue its road stint and face Tennessee at 11 a.m. CT Sunday.
