Commodores Conquer Crimson Tide

Tyler Tanner scored 23 second-half points in Vandy’s win over No. 13 Alabama

NASHVILLE, Tenn. — Tyler Tanner’s career-high 29-point performance led the No. 11-ranked Vanderbilt men’s basketball team to a 96-90 win over No. 13 Alabama Wednesday night at Memorial Gymnasium.

Vanderbilt (15-0, 2-0 SEC) shot 46 percent from the field and 35 percent from three while holding Alabama (11-4, 1-1 SEC) to a 37 percent field goal percentage and just 23 percent from beyond the arc.

Five Vandy student-athletes scored in double figures. Tanner led the Commodores with a career-high 29 points, followed by Duke Miles with 19. Tyler Nickel and AK Okereke contributed 12 and 10 points, respectively, while Devin McGlockton registered 10 points to go with 12 rebounds for his second double-double of the season.

The Crimson Tide had four players with double-digit points. Amari Allen tallied a team-high 25 points. Aden Holloway and Labaron Philon Jr. had respective point totals of 22 and 18. The fourth Bama player in double figures was Latrell Wrightsell Jr., who had 13 points.

The Commodores were hot out of the gate, going on a 10-0 run within the first four minutes of the game. Vandy maintained its advantage for much of the first half, at one point leading by as many as 11 points. But with under three minutes before the break, the Tide earned its first lead since 18:33 off a late 13-2 run. Vandy responded with a jumper by Okereke to put the Dores back in the lead. The two squads traded scores with a buzzer-beating layup from Nickel tying the game at 43 heading into halftime.

The second half started out neck and neck, but the Dores went on a 10-2 run midway through to pull away.

The Commodores are back in action on Saturday when Vanderbilt hosts LSU for a noon tipoff on the SEC Network.
