Commodores Battle Braves To Scoreless Tie 10/7/2005 NASHVILLE, Tenn. – The Vanderbilt men’s soccer team played 110 minutes to a scoreless tie with Bradley on Friday night at the VU Soccer Complex in the Missouri Valley Conference opener for both teams. It was the first stalemate of the season for both sides. The Commodores move to 5-4-1 on the season, while the Braves are now 7-3-1 on the year. On the day, Vanderbilt outshot Bradley, 20-14, including a 5-1 advantage in extra time. Commodore goalkeeper Kenny Schoeni earned his third shutout of the season by saving six shots. His Bradley counterpart, senior Chris Dunsheath, stoned five shots-on-goal from the Commodores. In the first period, the Commodores managed six shots to the Braves’ five. Even though only one shot was on goal, Vanderbilt created a number of chances. In the 19th minute, a free kick by Commodore senior Pat Ryan grazed the crossbar. Another Vanderbilt chance came in the 39th minute, when sophomore Joe Germanese turned on a ball from the top of the 18-yard box and sent it just wide to the right of the goal. Vanderbilt junior keeper Kenny Schoeni made a pair of saves in the first half, including a diving stop in the 27th minute on a Teddy Anderson shot. Schoeni saved four shots in the second half, but was not tested during the overtime period. The junior dominated the six-yard box, intercepting numerous crosses and corner kicks throughout the game. Senior John Krause led the Commodores with 10 shots in the game, including six attempts in extra time. The Commodores dominated possession through the first 19 minutes of the overtime before Bradley had one final attempt. Following a Vanderbilt clearance, however, the Braves were unable to organize a corner kick before the final whistle. The Commodores hit the road next weekend for matches with Evansville and Southwest Missouri State. Vanderbilt will return home on Wednesday, Oct. 9, to play host to Western Kentucky at the VU Soccer Complex. The match is scheduled to begin at 7 p.m. CT.
