NASHVILLE, Tenn. – Eleven home games at Memorial Gymnasium highlight the Commodores’ 2019-20 nonconference schedule, with the team’s regular season beginning Nov. 6 against Southeast Missouri State. Vanderbilt will only play two games away from home prior to Southeastern Conference play.
“We’re excited to announce that our fans will have 20 opportunities to experience Memorial Magic this season,” said head coach Jerry Stackhouse. “Going forward, we will look to increase the level of nonconference competition each and every year, and this year’s schedule is a great place to start. Our objective will be to continue to play a challenging nonconference schedule, but one with more of a balance between home and away. We want to continue to test and challenge our players and pursuing top-level competition that will not only prepare us for the rigors of SEC play, but ultimately in our pursuit of becoming a championship contending program.”
Vanderbilt will play its first exhibition game since 2014 when the Commodores will take on Clark Atlanta at Memorial Gym on Nov. 1, and then play six home games — Southeast Missouri State, Texas A&M Corpus Christi (Nov. 11), Austin Peay (Nov. 20), South Carolina State (Nov. 22), Southeastern Louisiana (Nov. 25) and Tulsa (Nov. 30) — in the month of November. Sandwiched between the six home games is a road trip to Richmond on Nov. 14.
In December, the Commodores will take on two consecutive 2019 NCAA Tournament teams in Buffalo (Dec. 3) and Liberty (Dec. 14) and then head to Phoenix to play in the Basketball Hall of Fame Showcase against Loyola (Chicago). Vanderbilt will then close out its nonconference schedule with three consecutive games against UNC Wilmington (Dec. 22), Davidson (Dec. 30) and SMU (Jan. 4).
“This season we will face several conference champions along with Buffalo and Liberty, who both made the 2019 NCAA Tournament,” said Stackhouse. “We will also tackle Davidson, Tulsa, and SMU – programs that have excellent basketball traditions.
“We look forward to the challenge of facing Loyola, a recent Final Four program, in Arizona. The road trip will allow us to face strong competition at a neutral site and provide Saben Lee, a Phoenix native, the opportunity to play in front of a hometown crowd.”
Vanderbilt’s SEC schedule will be released later this month. Times and television assignments are still to be determined.

“Our men have been hard at work this summer in preparation for the upcoming season and this announcement means the season is fast approaching,” said Stackhouse. “We’ll be ready for the challenge. See you at Memorial!”
