Sept. 30, 2014

The women’s basketball staff has welcomed two new additions this season — athletic trainer Kim Moseley and graduate assistant Ataira Franklin.

Moseley comes to Vanderbilt after a five-year stint as head athletic trainer for the WNBA’s Atlanta Dream, and Franklin joins the Commodores after completing an outstanding playing career at the University of Virginia.

Here’s a closer look at the newcomers:

KIM MOSELEY
Moseley, who has been an athletic trainer for 33 years, was the head athletic trainer and director of basketball operations with the Dream from 2009 through last season. She also spent two seasons with the Charlotte Sting prior to her stint with the Dream.

She is a certified member of the National Athletic Trainers’ Association. She received her Bachelor of Science Degree in Athletic Administration and Coaching with a specialization in Athletic Training and Master’s Degree in Physical Education from the University of Southern Mississippi in 1980 and ’81, respectively.

Her career path has included working as the Head Women’s Athletic Trainer at Florida State University and Head Athletic Trainer at Trevecca Nazarene University. She also held Assistant Athletic Trainer positions at Rice University, Tulane University and Southwest Texas State University.

A native of Biloxi, Miss., Moseley resides in Franklin. Her husband Don is an Athletic Trainer for the Tennessee Titans, and they have two children, Matthew (21) and Katie (19).

ATAIRA FRANKLIN
Franklin established herself as one of the most prolific scorers in the history of Virginia WBB during her career from 2011-14, including leading the team in scoring as a senior at 13.8 per game. She played in 131 career games, including making 122 starts.

She compiled 1,619 career points, which 11th on the school’s all-time list, and ranks third in career 3-pointers with 193. Her 224 career steals are the ninth most in team history. She closed out her career in strong style, reaching double digits in scoring in her final 14 games. For the season, she scored 20 or more points in six games.

Franklin was a First Team All-ACC selection as a junior, and was named to the ACC’s All-Freshmen team in 2011.

Franklin has basketball in her bloodlines, with both of her parents having played at the University of Illinois at Chicago.
