Tip-off time Sunday is 2:00 p.m.

Corbin is Team USA Coach

Most Vanderbilt fans quickly figured out that Tim Corbin was one of the nation’s finest collegiate baseball coaches.  It turns out that opinion is held by many others.

The fourth-year Commodore coach was named today as head coach of the 2006 USA Baseball National Team that will represent the United States this summer.  It is an honor reserved for only the nation’s elite as Corbin will coach the best freshmen and sophomores in NCAA baseball.

This will be Corbin’s second tour of duty with USA Baseball, but his first as a head coach. Corbin served as an assistant under Mike Gillespie (USC) on the 2000 team that posted an overall record of 27-3-1 and included such players as Mark Teixeira, Mark Prior, Bobby Crosby, Ryan Howard, Xavier Nady, Chris Burke, Dewon Brazelton, and Kirk Saarloos.

Last summer Commodore pitcher David Price saw his stock surge upward by starring on this team. . After the team is selected, Corbin will direct it in a pair of domestic series  — the 35th annual USA vs Japan Collegiate All-Star Series & a Friendship Series vs Chinese Taipei, before traveling to Cuba for the FISU Championships in August

As a bonus, Vanderbilt baseball media contact Thomas Samuel will serve as the 2006 USA Baseball National Team press officer.  This will be very helpful to Vanderbilt as Samuel will get to know and work with most of the nation’s top baseball writers.

More Hardball:  Meet the Commodores and New Alumni Game Added

Baseball will hold its 2006 “Meet the Commodores” banquet on Friday, Feb. 10 at 6:30 p.m. at the Vanderbilt Marriott Stadium Club.

The banquet will start with autographs and a social hour with dinner at 7:30 p.m. All guests will receive a new poster, media guide and schedule cards.  Tim Corbin will introduce the team and announce the awards for the 2005 team. Joe Fisher will serve as emcee.

Tickets are $35 for adults and $12 for children. Corporate tables ($600) are also available by calling Director of Baseball Operations Mike Calitri at 615-322-3716. Seating is limited to the first 400 guests, so interested parties should call as soon as possible.  Fans have realized this has become one of our best and most interesting banquets.

In addition to the banquet, this year the Commodores will have an alumni game on Saturday, Feb. 11 at 11 a.m. The game will feature the current squad against former Vanderbilt players. Those scheduled to play for the alumni team are Jeremy Sowers, Jensen Lewis, Ryan Mullins, Cesar Nicholas, Ryan Klosterman and Mike Baxter among others.

If there is bad weather, the game will be rescheduled for Sunday, Feb. 12 at 1:00 p.m.

Bowlers Winning On and Off Lanes

You may have noticed that our bowling team upset the two-time defending national champion Nebraska over the weekend, setting a school record in the process.  Using a team of five freshmen, the Commodores averaged 219 to total 1,095 pins in toppling the powerful Huskers.  When you also consider that the lanes were “sport shot” — the equivalent of the green conditions at the Masters Tournament — you can see that the future of this team is promising.

What you may not know is that this squad also had the No. 1 cumulative grade among all Vanderbilt varsity teams last semester.  Ten of 11 team members topped 3.0 as the squad notched a 3.456 composite.

VU Dominates Dinner of Champions Field

Four Commodores are among the five finalists for Amateur Athlete of the Year at the Nashville Sports Council sponsored O’Charley’s Dinner of Champions coming up February 13.  Gridiron stars Jay Cutler and Earl Bennett, golf’s Luke List and baseball’s David Price are all strong contenders.

Cutler, the SEC Player of the Year, is also a finalist for Nashville’s Sports Person of the Year.
