Commodore Notebook 10/10 10/10/2005 Notes and Commentary Chris Gaines is Homecoming Grand Marshall Our Homecoming parade is set for Friday afternoon at six o’clock and former linebacker All-American Chris Gaines will serve as the Grand Marshall. This parade, once a huge affair a half-century ago, has been reenergized in recent years through the enthusiasm of Chancellor Gee and the efforts of the Office of Student Life and athletics. The parade will start on 29th Avenue South, travel down West End Avenue before turning onto the campus at Carmichael Towers. It turns on Vanderbilt Place, turns right on 25th at Memorial Gym and ends up on Greek Row. The COMMODORE QUAKE, the annual Friday evening entertainment component of Homecoming, features the YING YANG TWINS and CHINGY! Their concert starts at 8:30 pm in the Memorial Gymnasium. Doors open at 7:30 pm. Tickets are on sale now at the Sarratt Box Office. Gaines, who was also an assistant coach in the late 1990’s here, will be Vanderbilt’s representative at the SEC Living Legends Dinner in Atlanta in early December. TV Land Vanderbilt football has been on television five times in six games and the ratings have been quite good. The MTSU game, telecast by local UPN and picked up nationally by ESPN’s Gameplan, garnered a 13 rating and a 23% share of the local market, which equates to about 130,000 households. This is a similar viewership to the Ole Miss game telecast by Jefferson Pilot, considered quite good in the television industry. The Florida-Alabama game on CBS, for instance, carried a 10 rating in this market. Plenty of Purple LSU Athletic Director Skip Bertman gazed out at the purple haze that enveloped Vanderbilt Stadium and noted that his fans had traveled to the game in larger numbers than normal for two particular reasons: LSU fans enjoy coming to Nashville and as a western division team don’t get the opportunity on a regular basis and Louisianans were eager to get out of the state and get their minds on something beside storm damage for a few days. Double Duty ESPN football analyst Mike Gottfried, who provided the commentary for our Saturday night LSU game, was the featured speaker the next evening at the Brentwood United Methodist Church with a family theme. He will be back in our pressbox Saturday working the Georgia game. Check out Black and Gold Baseball Series Tim Corbin’s excellent Commodore baseball team will conclude its formal fall practice drills this Friday, Saturday and Sunday with the annual Black and Gold Series. Friday’s game is set for 6:00 p.m. with Saturday set for 11:00 a.m. first pitch and Sunday concluding the series beginning at 1:00 p.m. This team has a new look about it and for many of us it will be the first chance to see the freshman class that has been rated among the top four in the nation. Soccer Hosts Vols, Lady Dawgs Have you been waiting for the right time to catch a Vanderbilt women’s soccer game? I’ve got it?this Friday at 7 o’clock against Tennessee on the Vanderbilt Soccer Complex behind McGugin Center. We will enter 12-2 and fresh off an outstanding 12 game winning streak while Tennessee is leading the SEC with a 6-0 record. Ronnie Hill’s team is 5-1 in SEC play, winning all five by shutout and 11 on the year that way. We will be trying to set a school attendance record and the marketing staff has some fun promotions planned. Sunday afternoon the Commodores host Georgia with game time at 2:00 p.m. Hoop Jam Our men’s and women’s basketball teams will host “Hoop Jam,” a two-hour preseason event previewing the coming season, Thursday evening, Oct. 27 at Memorial beginning at 6:30 p.m. Admission is free. Similar to football’s “Dore Jam,” the family friendly basketball event will give Commodore followers a chance to meet players and coaches from both teams and gather autographs. Following a one-hour autograph session, both teams will be introduced and participate in on-court competitions. |
