Commodore Golfers are Arizona Champions 2/26/2004 Vanderbilt won its second tournament of the season Wednesday by capturing Arizona’s Wildcat Invitational by four shots over Ohio State. Sophomore May Wood won her second collegiate title in the process, shooting two-under par 69 today to finish the championship with a four-under 209. She had won last year’s Bryan National title. Senior Courtney Wood of Brentwood, Tenn., finished in fourth place, three-over par. “This was a quality team victory,” said an obviously pleased Martha Freitag. “We defeated three teams ranked in the Top 5 so we are obviously pleased and excited. Our team once again played steady and smart. May Wood and Sarah Jacobs played exceptional golf today but everyone contributed to this championship. It is a good way to begin the spring.” May Wood entered the 18th hold tied for the lead with California’s Sophia Sheridan. The Chattanooga native notched her second eagle of the day (the first on No. 5) while Sheridan bogeyed for the three shot swing. “I played very solid golf,” Wood said. “I gave myself a lot of opportunities to make birdies and actually should have shot a bit lower than I did but I wasn’t making many putts.” Freitag was especially pleased with the strong finishing performances of her team, noting in addition to May Wood’s spectacular finish that Courtney Wood played her last six holes two-under par. The tenth-ranked Commodores, winners of last fall’s Kentucky Wildcat Invitational, had jumped into the team lead after yesterday’s second round and never strayed from the top. “We used everyone’s score during the tournament,” Freitag noted, “so there is no doubt it was a total team victory.” Vanderbilt Results May Wood 70-70-69–209 Final Team Standings VANDERBILT 869
