Vanderbilt falls at Georgia in regular season finale

ATHENS, Ga. — Jason Edwards scored a game-high 24 points, but Vanderbilt shot just 38.6 percent as Georgia pulled away for a 79-68 victory on Saturday afternoon at Stegeman Coliseum.

Edwards hit 7-of-11 from the floor and 2-of-3 from beyond the arc to lead Vanderbilt (20-11, 8-10 SEC). Jaylen Carey and Chris Mañon scored 10 apiece to give the Commodores three in double figures.

Georgia (20-11, 8-10 SEC) was led by Asa Newell and Silas Demary Jr. who each scored 15 for the Bulldogs. Somto Cyril added 14 and Tyrin Lawrence 13 to aid the Dawgs. Georgia finished the game shooting 45 percent from the field and 44 percent from the three-point line.

A back-and-forth first half featured 11 lead changes as the Dores and Dawgs hit the break tied at 39-39. Georgia used an early 11-2 run in the second half to build an 8-point edge just five minutes in the half. Vandy cut the deficit to two with 10 minutes to play in the game, but the Dores fell silent, going scoreless for the next six minutes. Georgia capitalized with a 15-0 run to pull away for the win.

Georgia owned a 22-10 advantage in points off turnovers as the Dores coughed it up 14 times, including nine turnovers in the second half. The Dawgs also took advantage of a shorthanded Vanderbilt bench, outscoring the Dores 34-19 off the pine.

Vanderbilt now turns its attention to the SEC Tournament in Bridgestone Arena. The Commodores will be the No. 12 seed and play Texas at 2:30 p.m. CT on Wednesday.
