Clark Organizing Memorial Scholarship

Neal Clark

A Vanderbilt University academic counselor has been busy coordinating details for a memorial scholarship in the name of a friend who tragically drowned one year ago.

Neal Clark, who works with Commodore varsity student-athletes in the Stratton-Foster Academic Center at McGugin Center, has directed a wide range of efforts to honor the memory of Cledis Lamont Settle, a Paducah, Ky., native and Murray State graduate student when he died in June of 2005.

The culmination of his first year’s work occurs with a banquet August 8 in Paducah. At that time, the first scholarship recipient will be announced.

“Lamont Settle was an outstanding young man and a good friend,” Clark says. “We wanted to honor his legacy as a person who mentored and volunteered with teenagers, who loved life and athletics and who valued education and career development. We want his good work to be remembered and we know he would want all of us to help deserving young people in the process.”

Clark has been a member of the Vanderbilt athletic staff for two years, working with the men’s basketball and bowling teams.

Originally from Paducah, Neal served as an Academic Advisor at the University of Kentucky and as the Assistant Director of Student-Athlete Services for Football at James Madison University before arriving at Vanderbilt University.

As an undergraduate student-athlete at Kentucky, he was a three-year letterman in football. He broke UK’s single season reception record and was the most valuable player and a team captain for the 1991 season. Neal graduated from the Kentucky with a B.A. in Social Work in May 1992 and completed his M.A in Social Work in August of 2001.
