The 11th-ranked Vanderbilt women’s golf team carded a six-over par, 294, in the first round of the Allstate Sugar Bowl Intercollegiate and are in fourth place in the team standings, with freshman Cindy Ha leading the way with a three-under, 69, in her first time around the English Turn Golf and Country Club in New Orleans.
Vanderbilt trails first-place LSU by 10 shots heading into the second round Monday, while Ha is tied for second with Tulane’s Emily Penttila and trails the Tigers’ Madeline Sagstrom for the individual lead by one.
“I may be more impressed by today’s effort than I have been at any time this year, only because we came in after a week of weather that kept us from preparing the way we wanted,” said Vanderbilt head coach Greg Allen. “After a rough start, we really showed some toughness and kept grinding until the end. It’s not very often that Jenn and Kendall are our two high scores, so it was great to see Cindy, Toni and Farney play well. I like the attitude of the team and I’m excited to see them get back out there tomorrow and compete.”
Ha’s 69 included five birdies, which tied Sagstrom for the most of the day by an individual and her Sunday total matched her second-lowest round of the season.
The Commodores also counted a 73 from Antonia Scherer, a 75 from Alexandra Farnsworth, and a 77 from Kendall Martindale. Jennifer Hahn carded a 78 on Sunday.
The second round of the tournament continues on Monday at the par-72, 6,189-yard English Turn Golf and Country Club.
