Commodore freshman Abbey Carlson carded a two-over par 74 in the first round of the Clover Cup to lead Vanderbilt on Friday in Mesa, Arizona. As a team, Vanderbilt is in a tie for 11th place with a total of 302.
Vanderbilt counted Carlson’s 74, sophomore Courtney Zeng’s 75, junior Alexandra Farnsworth’s 75, and senior Kate Sborov’s 78 at the par-72, 6,184-yard Longbow Golf Club.
“I thought we had a really good game plan after the practice round and it really came down to not executing the shots today,” said Vanderbilt head coach Greg Allen. “As a team we didn’t play the par fives very well and we really didn’t give ourselves a lot of good birdie opportunities when we had short irons in our hands. The girls were receptive to what we had to say after the round and we have 36 more holes. In our mind, that’s 36 more opportunities. We just need to do a better job of executing.”
Florida State leads the tournament with a nine-under, 279. Individually, Courtney Tibiletti of Houston leads all players with a six-under, 66.
The second round of the tournament continues on Saturday.
