Byington Adds Three to Hoops Staff

Rodney Terry and Joel Justus join as assistant coaches, Chad Myers named director of recruiting

NASHVILLE, Tenn. – Vanderbilt men’s basketball head coach Mark Byington announced the additions of Rodney Terry and Joel Justus as assistant coaches, and Chad Myers as the Commodores’ director of recruiting.

Terry was most recently the head coach at Texas from 2023-25 after being appointed as the interim head coach for the Longhorns for much of the 2022-23 season. Terry led Texas to the NCAA Tournament in all four seasons at the end of the bench, including the Big 12 Tournament title and an Elite Eight appearance in 2023.

“I’ve known Rodney for a long time, and I have tremendous respect for the way he approaches the game,” Byington said. “It is a huge addition when our program adds someone that has had success as head coach and assistant coach. I’m excited to have Rodney on our staff and confident he’ll make an immediate impact on our program.”

Terry also owns a decade of head coaching experience across UTEP and Fresno State. The new Commodore assistant spent 2011-18 at Fresno State where he built the Bulldog program to a 25-10 record and Mountain West championship in 2015-16.

The 2023 Sporting News Coach of the Year, Terry has amassed a 225-193 career record across his three head coaching stops. Known as one of the top recruiters in the country, Terry spent 2002-11 as an assistant under Rick Barnes at Texas. During that span, Terry played a major role in the recruitments of stars such as Kevin Durant, D.J. Augustin and Tristan Thompson.

Another highly regarded recruiter, Joel Justus joins the Commodore staff after spending the past two seasons at Ohio State. Last season, Justus helped the Buckeyes to a 21-13 mark and an NCAA Tournament appearance.

“Joel is one of the most respected minds in college basketball, and we’re thrilled to welcome him to our staff,” said Byington. “His experience at the highest levels of the game speaks for itself. Joel has a great feel for player development and has coached many players that progressed to the NBA.

I truly believe Joel, like others on my staff, will eventually be a high-level head coach in college basketball. Our program is going to benefit tremendously from his knowledge and energy, and I’m excited to get to work with him.”

Justus was instrumental in running the Buckeye offense, guiding Ohio State to 78.8 points per game in 2024-25 and 79.3 points in 2025-26. The Buckeyes hit 261 threes in his first season and 273 in 2025-26, both marks ranking in the top seven seasons in program history.

Prior to his time in Columbus, Justus served as an assistant for two seasons at NC State where he helped the Wolfpack to the 2023-24 Final Four and an ACC Tournament title. Justus also knows his way around the SEC, spending seven seasons as a member of the Kentucky staff from 2014-2021. He served as an assistant coach for the final five years of his tenure with the Wildcats.

Chad Myers joins the Commodores as the Director of Recruiting after spending the past two seasons as the national high school team head coach at Link Academy. While at Link Academy, Myers developed some of the best talent in the nation with double digit four-plus star recruits in his two seasons in Branson, Missouri.

Myers also led the IMG Academy program for two seasons, amassing a 55-4 mark and two national tournament appearances. His extensive prep career also includes a two-year stint at Elev8 Academy where he produced 21 DI commits and a 50-14 record in two seasons.

“Chad has built a reputation as one of the premier recruiters of talent in the game at the prep level, and what he accomplished at Link Academy, IMG, Elev8 and Massanutten Military speaks volumes about his ability build a winning culture,” Byington said. “He is very connected with recruiting ties in all different parts of the country.

“Chad has coached many players that are currently on NBA rosters, and he was a huge part of their development.  Our players are going to benefit from his experience and his passion for the game every single day.”

Myers spent five years across two stints as the head coach at Massanutten Military Academy in Virginia. He amassed a 146-27 record while producing 25 DI signees in his time at MMA.

At the collegiate level, Myers served as an assistant at New Mexico State in the 2022-23 season and served as Radford’s director of operations from 2009-11.
