Vanderbilt rising senior Derrick Byars will join six other Southeastern Conference basketball players as part of a missionary trip to Brazil, May 15-28.

Sponsored by Sports Reach, the squad also includes Florida guard Lee Humphrey, Ole Miss guard Todd Abernethy, forward Bobby Perry and center Jared Carter from Kentucky, and guard Billy Humphrey and forward Steve Newman from Georgia. The team will be coached by former Morehead State mentor Kyle Macy.

The team will play exhibition contests with Brazilian basketball squads in Fortaleza, Belem and Sao Paulo while leading clinics and experiencing other ministry opportunities.

Byars averaged 12.4 points, 3.6 rebounds and a team-high 3.2 assists during the Commodores’ 2006 campaign. He ranked second in the SEC in 3-point shooting at 44.1 percent (63-of-143) and seventh in 3-pointers made per game (2.10).

Sports Reach is a non-profit and non-denominational ministry founded in 1986 that has traveled into 18 countries on five continents and into 26 states in America. The ministry has sponsored teams in several sports, including baseball, basketball, golf, soccer, softball and volleyball.

Last summer, Vanderbilt’s Alex Gordon and Shan Foster joined a Sports Reach squad of SEC players that spent two weeks in China.
