Vanderbilt freshman Maria Bulanova was named the Southland Bowling League Bowler of the Month for December, the league announced on Wednesday. Bulanova is the second consecutive Commodore to receive the honor, with Kristin Quah earning the distinction for the month of November.
The Moscow, Russia native earned the honor following a dominant performance at the Allstate Sugar Bowl Collegiate Invitational, where she finished first out of 68 competitors with an average score of 235.7 per game over 147 frames. Bulanova averaged 22.966 per frame with a 65.3 strike percentage and finished with an average margin of 10.1 over the second-place finisher, earning her Tournament MVP honors.
She paced a strong team performance for the Commodores, with teammates Kristin Quah and Giselle Poss finishing third and sixth, respectively.
Vanderbilt currently ranks second overall in the Southland in team overall scoring average (20.187 per frame) and team overall fill percentage (85.29) while picking up a league-best 91.99 percent of single pin spares.
Quah was also named an honorable mention for the Bowler of the Month award, along with Tulane’s Michelle Ng.
Southland Bowlers of the Month are voted on by each school’s sports information directors. Voting for one’s own school is not permitted. To receive honorable mention, a student-athlete must receive votes from 25 percent of the Southland sports information directors.
