Bowling Team Opens Friday

A bit of Vanderbilt sports history will unfold Friday in Mankato, Minnesota when the newly formed Commodore bowling team makes its debut.

Vanderbilt began its sixteenth varsity sport this fall by searching the student body for bowling enthusiasts. Coach John Williamson has been working with a roster of a dozen for a little more than a month.

Eight Commodores are expected to make the historic first trip to compete over the three days against host Minnesota State–Mankato and the current national champion, Nebraska.

The Vanderbilt representatives include:

Brittany Jackson, Fr., Nashville; Kristen Walker, Fr., Antioch, Tenn.;  Ashleigh Beamer, Fr., Charlotte, N.C.;  Jennifer Redmond, Jr., Charlotte, N.C.;  Jessica Tower, So., Denver, Colo.; Brittany Muller, Fr., Vernon Hills, Ill.;  Kim Simpson, Sr., Clarksville, Tenn.; and Therese Griner, Sr., St. Louis.

The triangular meet has all the teams facing each other Friday, Saturday and Sunday.

“The competition should be exciting for our team,” Williamson says, “and we expect it will be a real learning experience.  Minnesota State has a new program but Nebraska is an established power participating in this event to help our new programs get off the ground.”

The Minnesota competition will be the Commodores’ only tournament until the Southern Invitational in Baton Rouge on January 15.
