Bowling Seeded Third After Qualifying Rounds

Freshman Katelyn Abigania was the Commodores’ top individual finisher

YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio — Vanderbilt bowling, ranked third in the NTCA preseason coaches poll, is the No. 3 seed heading into the final day of competition after going 3-2 on Saturday at the Chelsea Gilliam Penguin Classic in Youngstown, Ohio.

“It was good day, not as clean, but we were very consistent,” head coach John Williamson said. “We just weren’t able to create the high numbers we had yesterday. We did enough to make the top four and have a chance to win the event tomorrow. Dannielle (Henderson) was very consistent today”

Freshman Katelyn Abigania was the Commodores’ top individual finisher, placing ninth with scores of 209, 222, 257, 205 and 197. Sophomore Dannielle Henderson also placed top 15 individually. She tallied scores of 183, 200, 245, 227 and 213 to finish 11th.

Building off Friday’s momentum, Vanderbilt started Saturday’s traditional games with a 981-873 win over No. 12 Duquesne. It was Vandy’s only score of the day under 1,000 pins. The Dores started the day with a lineup of Victoria Varano, Avery Domaguin, Alyssa Ballard, Abigania and Henderson, but made several changes throughout the day as nine different student-athletes saw the lanes.

In match 2, the Dores defeated Saint Anselm by a score of 1,032-848.

Vanderbilt had at least three bowlers with scores over 200 pins in every match. The Dores totaled 1,098 pins in their win over No. 14 Mt. Saint Mary’s, their highest score of the day. Abigania’s 257 led the way, followed by scores of 245 from Henderson and 226 from Natalie Kent.

Vandy dropped its final two matches of the day, a 1,160-1,027 decision to No. 4 seed Arkansas State and a 1,086-1,038 match to top-seeded Jacksonville State.

The Commodores and Red Wolves will rematch Sunday morning in the first round of bracket play, which begins at 7:25 a.m. CT.
