Bowlers Win One of Three in Minnesota

11/12/2005

MANKATO, MN—Vanderbilt’s bowling team defeated Arkansas State but lost to Nebraska and Minnesota State Friday night in the opening games of the Maverick Challenge.

The Commodores need 10th frame heroics from freshman Michelle Peloquin to edge Arkansas State, 968-965 in the third game of the evening. Peloquin successfully converted the difficult 5-7 split and followed with a strike to give her team the narrow three pin victory. She rolled 226 for the game and got good support from another freshman, Kaitlin Reynolds, who contributed a 216.

Peloquin, a native of Enfield, Ct., led Vanderbilt in the other two games as well. The defending national champion Nebraska team slid past Vanderbilt 962-945 with Peloquin having a 248 and yet another freshman, Tara Kane, coming in at 214. In the second game of the evening, host Minnesota State took advantage of a Commodore letdown to win 998-889. Peloquin was the only Commodore over 200, rolling a 225 despite going open the last two frames.

“We had some good things happen,” said Coach John Williamson. “Michelle’s 10th frame against Arkansas State was special and I thought Kaitlin Reynolds showed some toughness after she split her thumb midway through the last match and still managed a 216. However, we had opportunities in every game and failed to convert far too many times. We left nine makeable spares against Nebraska and had 11 against Minnesota State.”

The tournament continues Saturday and concludes Sunday.
