HUNTSVILLE, Ala. — Vanderbilt had an impressive start to its season, running off five wins against no losses while showing its depth in winning Alabama A & M’s Bulldog Challenge.

The Commodores used a mix of youth and experience most of the day, opening with two freshmen, two sophomores and one senior and then mixing and matching from there on. There were many places to find encouragement and while Coach John Williamson was pleased, he sounded a cautionary note as well.

“We had some real bright spots,” he said, “but at the same time we understand we have plenty of work to do. It was a good start but we certainly are not where we expect to be later in the season. Today we had people stepping up in every game to make big shots so in that I am pleased.”

Williamson pointed out Jessica Earnest’s strong debut as an anchor and gave a thumbs up to all four freshmen with a special nod to Amanda Fry in the lead-off slot.

“From a lead-off perspective I thought Amanda was good,” he said. “She gave us excellent energy and was consistent which gave us a nice spark.”

Williamson was most pleased with his team’s finishes, often doubling in the 10th frame. He noted that Robyn Renslow, another freshman, made eight strikes in 10 frames during the championship Baker games.

“It is probably not wise to single out any one player because I thought everyone bowled well,” Williamson said, “and I think everyone has things they can improve upon.”

Vanderbilt travels to New Jersey in two weeks for Fairleigh Dickinson’s tournament.
