Bowlers Travel to Maryland

Nov. 16, 2006

The Vanderbilt bowling team heads to the Maryland-Eastern Shore Invitational Friday with competition Saturday and Sunday.

“This will be a decidedly different tournament from the one we just left in Wisconsin,” Coach John Williamson explains. “This will have 19 teams – a very large field – and it will give us a chance to see many of the teams in the Northeast. It will also have Baker games, something we didn’t see last week.”

The Commodores are coming off a close third-place finish at the Wisconsin-Whitewater Invitational last weekend in which No. 1 rated Fairleigh Dickinson, No. 2 ranked Nebraska and the No. 4 Black and Gold separated themselves from the rest of the field. FDU will also appear in this event while Nebraska will not.

Vanderbilt’s Mandy Keily will hope to continue her hot streak, one that saw her win individual honors in Wisconsin with nearly a 206 average over the sport-shot conditioned lanes. She will be joined by sophomore classmates Tara Kane, Michelle Peloquin, Karen Grygiel and Kaitlin Reynolds along with freshmen Josie Earnest and Ashley Belden.

The tournament, hosted by Maryland-Eastern Shore is actually conduced in Millsboro, Del. A year ago the Commodores went 8-2 and were third in the 19-team field with Tara Kane placing sixth to lead VU.

The event will have team games Saturday and conclude with Baker games Sunday.

A list of competing teams: Adelphi, Bowie State, Coppin State, Cheney, Delaware State, Fairleigh Dickinson, Grambling, Howard, Hampton, Maryland Eastern Shore, Morgan State, New Jersey City, Norfolk State, Sacred Heart, Saint Peters, Saint Paul’s, Southern, Vanderbilt, Winston Salem State

Editor’s Note: Baker games entail each of the five team members bowling a frame in a rotation. i.e. Bowler No. 1 has the first frame and the sixth frame, Bowler No. 2 rolls the second and seventh frames, etc.
