GREENWOOD, MS—Vanderbilt is tied with three other teams for the lead at the Mississippi Valley State Invitational after the first day of bowling Saturday.

The Commodores, 25-4 on the season, won four of five games and join Arkansas State, Nebraska and Minnesota State-Mankato atop the nine-team field. There are three games left Sunday with the tournament decided on won-loss record, not pin fall.

Karen Grygiel had a big day for Vanderbilt, averaging 212 over the four games she played with scores of 222, 195, 233 and 200.

“Karen did an excellent job today,” Coach John Williamson noted. “The condition of the lanes was tougher than one would think with a house shot but the wood lanes were extremely dry. These were the conditions that Karen grew up on and she handled them very well. If we had not substituted for her in one game she would be leading the tournament.”

The fourth-ranked `Dores topped Grambling, Arkansas State, Mississippi Valley State and Texas Southern while losing to Nebraska. The Huskers, in turn, went 3-1 with a bye, losing to Arkansas State. Vanderbilt will not face any of these squads tomorrow and trails Nebraska in tie-breaker pin fall, 4,880 to 4,723.

Vanderbilt is now 14-1 over its last 15 games.
